The nature of developmental trauma, born in adverse childhood experiences will be discussed in terms of the measurable effects on the brain. The experience and the behavior of those living with these unresolved histories will be reviewed. Evidence based interventions with the main focus on neurofeedback including specific protocols wil be discussed.

Based on the content of this presentation, the participant will be able to:
- Participants will be able to name the main groups of causes of developmental trauma and relate the current behaviour of their clients to their histories of adverse childhood experiences.
- The attendees will be able to relate the impact of trauma on the developing brain to key brain structures and brain networks.
- Clinicians will be able to detect sub-conscious defence- reactions and relate those particular survival responses to the arousal of the CNS to be able to intervene appropriately.
- Practitioners will be able to formulate the main goals of neurofeedback intervention from an arousal model perspective.
- Clinicians will be able to select certain appropriate neurofeedback amplitude training protocols and evaluate the short-term effects of those training protocols on the CNS.

Helena Bester, BCN
Helena is a Board-Certified clinical neurofeedback practitioner as well as a registered neurofeedback mentor with the Biofeedback Certification International Alliance. She is also a Healthcare Practitioner registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa. Helena was nominated and appointed the Vice President of the Biofeedback Association of South Africa (BFSA) in 2017.
Since 2019 she has attended most accessible international trauma conferences, webinars, and courses and in the process undertook an in-depth journey of becoming a trauma informed clinical neurofeedback practitioner. She wrote the chapter on trauma in the second edition of the book on neurofeedback under the close mentorship and guidance of Sebern Fisher. The focus in her practice in Maputo, Mozambique has shifted to trauma intervention although she still works with a wider range of disorders. She is currently working on a next book on trauma in her bush retreat in Mpumalanga.
Helena Bester started her professional life as a Secondary School teacher. She was promoted to the youngest female Head of Department in South Africa and soon thereafter Deputy Principal after she had been honoured with two merit awards.
Helena was the co-founder of the first private remedial clinics in the Western Cape. In her extended work with children with learning difficulties and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, she also conducted her own research to find viable alternatives to stimulant medication. This is how her work with Neurotherapy began. She also compiled a learning readiness program focused on preventing barriers to learning.
