Instructor:

Sebern Fisher, MA, BCN

Course description:  As clinicians we are increasingly faced with serious mental illness, most of which has its roots in neglect, parental absence and/or abuse in early childhood. Recent research suggests the primacy of broken or unavailable attachment in the development of the most dreaded condition of all, “Borderline Personality Disorder”. The area of the brain most disrupted is the brainstem. This presentation will offer an overview of the reactive brainstem, will look at “Borderline Personality” as an affect regulation problem that we can address with neurofeedback and will provide a brief overview of a relatively new therapeutic approach that targets the brainstem, Deep Brain Re-Orienting developed by Frank Corrigan, MD.

Who is the Audience:

Psychotherapists using neurofeedback in treatment of developmental trauma

Level:  Intermediate

Specific Learning objectives:

Based on the content of this presentation, the participant will be able to:

    • Identify that fear circuitry begins in the brainstem
    • Identify the core issue in developmental trauma as attachment failure or rupture
    • Explain the attachment pattern that predicts “Borderline Personality”
    • Utilize neurofeedback protocols that focus on the back of the brain
    • Plan to begin to explore Deep Brain Re=orienting as a therapy synergistic with neurofeedback

Instructor Sebern F. Fisher, MA, is a psychotherapist and neurofeedback practitioner in private practice who specializes in the aftermath of neglect and abuse in early childhood. She focuses on training the traumatized brain to learn its own regulation which it can learn at any age. She trains professionals nationally and internationally on neurofeedback and on the need to integrate neurofeedback with psychotherapy. Her book, Neurofeedback in the Treatment of Developmental Trauma: Calming the Fear-Driven Brain, has helped her readers understand how the traumatized brain can give rise to explosive feelings, irrational thinking and destructive behavior. When the brain learns its own regulation, its owner can engage meaningfully in psychotherapy and in life. The book is now also available as an audiobook on Audible.
