Profile Narrative
Helena Bester is a neurofeedback practitioner in private practice in South Africa and in Mozambique.She has been in private practice for the past 25 years . She is the author of five books on ADHD, learning difficulties and neurofeedback. Helena specialised in the treatment of ADHD sufferers and learning difficulties until 2005 when she added Neurofeedback as a treatment modality to her practice. She has since worked with children and adults suffering addiction, ADHD, anxiety, depression, insomnia, fibromyalgia, OCD, PTSD and other causes of discomfort as the title of her latest book suggests: " Neurofeedback- The Non-Invasive Alternative. An Intervention for ADHD, Anxiety, Depression,Dyslexia, Epilepsy, Insomnia, Fibromyalgia, PTSD, and other Causes of Discomfort". The foreword to this book was written by Sebern Fisher whom Helena regards as an important and revered mentor in her career. The book will be promoted at the ISNR Conference in Denver , Colorado .Helena's intention with the book on neurofeedback was not only to promote the field in South Africa but also to encourage all Health Care Professionals as well as those suffering many of the disorders and discomforts associated with the reality we are all caught up in, to consider embracing the research findings and possibilities of the different modalities of applied neuroscience. We need to get the word out that most of us sharing this human experience, fall prey to dysregulation of brain activity that causes immense discomfort in one way or another at some point and that chemical interventions are no longer the only viable treatment options.The basics of relevant neuroanatomy, the EEG signal, the origin, the development, the process and the applications of neurofeedback and different standardised protocols as well as assessment methods are included in Neurofeedback- The Non-Invasive Alternative. The book provides case studies of an array of disorders from different clinicians . The latest research findings and efficacy levels are listed and discussed. Dedicated chapters on the stress response, depression and ADHD are included.
Helena was elected as the vice-president of the BFSA in 2017. She is BCIA certified in neurofeedback and HPCSA registered . She holds professional membership with ISNR, BFSA and SADAG.
